Welcome to Sou Wòch

Our first Kid Feed in Sou Wòch was July 12, 2020. We have been able to continue almost every week since then as money is available. Prices of food have almost doubled, and we are feeding more kids.

The cost per event was $150 at the beginning, but it now takes over $300 to feed 80-90 kids a hot meal of locally grown rice and beans, with chicken marinated and cooked in a sauce made with green pepper, onion, scallions, and garlic. It’s good food, and for many of the children, the best meal they have all week.

Until recently, all the cooking was done using charcoal, which I wasn’t happy about, but last month we were able to buy a large, propane cooker and a very large cooking kettle for the rice and beans.

We also hand out a chewy, multivitamin to every kid as bowls are filled.

Food insecurity, as it is labeled, is widespread in Haiti. No kid in Sou wòch is in real danger of starving to death, but malnutrition and chronic hunger are a reality. A good nutritious meal on a regular basis ameliorates these problems.

Lend a Hand

Education, vocational and academic, for a better future.

I saw images of the devastation on the big screen; I learned that poor masonry construction was one of the primary causes of so many deaths; I felt an all consuming desire to go to Haiti–maybe I could do something useful since I was a bricklayer with 35 years experience. And I wanted to do something redemptive. That was in the spring of 2010.
