The House of Leonce and Sandra
The first time a looked at this house, I knew that it would collapse should there be an earthquake. A casual observer could see that it was top heavy, making it more likely to catastrophically fail if the ground started shaking. It withstood Hurricane Matthew in October of 2016, but it was doomed by the earthquake of August, 20221. By the grace of God, no one died when this house shook to pieces. There were injuries—scrapes, cuts, broken collar bone—but all six children and mom and dad survived.
Haitian Mason Project helped Leonce and Sandra with money for a temporary shelter. Zakary, #7 of Leonce and Sandra’s children, was born shortly after the trembler. This family needed a real house, strong and secure.
Leonce, his sons, and other family members cleared the rubble, and the HMP construction crew began digging for footings and foundation a couple months later in November. Following is the story in pictures:
