I remember watching the TV series Rin Tin Tin back when I was a lad. I don’t remember much, except that many episodes ended with the sound of the bugle and the cavalry galloping in just in time to save the day. I think I had a naive expectation that an intervening international force could charge into Port-au- Prince, eliminate the gangs and open the streets and highways so that needed fuel, food, and medicine could be delivered.
It doesn’t appear that anything like that will happen. It’s all too complicated. No one can predict when schools will be able to reopen. In a conversation with the provost of AUC yesterday, I said it is a tragedy for students to be out of school so long, then the provost said that it is a catastrophe. I am heartsick seeing what is happening in Haiti. But we were able to do a Kid Feed in Sou Wòch yesterday. My mason-crew boss has been learning how to use a design tool on his laptop, and he came up with this rendering with input from Hertha, me and others. He figures that the total cost for demolition and rebuilding the old house of Madam Elvie will be around $ 40,000.00 (Cook House Project). The expanded kitchen could then be used for more than Kid Feed and be a benefit to the community. After buying what we needed for yesterday’s Kid Feed, Hertha told me that prices were still going up and the availability of food was going down—less food for higher price. For many Haitians, the situation is grim and approaching dire. Again, a big THANK YOU! to those of you who are contributing to Kid Feed.
